Streetlighting initiative Phase 2 – information from Cornwall Council

Dear Town and Parish Councils involved in Phase 2

As you’ll be aware we’ve been working towards switching off streetlighting in certain circumstances. Switch off and dimming will be coming to all almost all communities.

We have seen a number of examples from across the country and Europe where authorities have adopted this best practice, to save carbon, save costs and to contribute to improving the environment for nature. In Cornwall we began in December 2023 with a small selection of ‘willing adopters’ across 10 parishes, and are now progressing to a more extensive roll-out.

The next areas to be added to the switch-off profile are;

Angarrack Crantock Golant Longrock Perranporth Sennen Treburley
Bissoe Crowlas Goldsithney Longstone Perrnuthnoe St Breward Treburrick
Blisland Cubert Goonhavern Ludgvan Perranwell St Buryan Treen
Bodinnick Devoran Gwennap Marazion Perranarworthal St Cleer Trefrew
Bray Shop Dobwalls Gwithian Mawgan Porth Playing Place St Erth Tregoodwell
Camelford Doddycross Hatt Menheniot Polgigga St Eval Tremar Coombe
Cargreen Doublebois Helland Nanstallon Polyphant St Keyne Trewidland
Carharrack Downgate Holywell Newbridge Porthcurno St Mawgan Twelveheads
Chacewater East Taphouse Lewannick North Hill Rosudgeon St Merryn Upton Towans
Coads Green Feock Little Petherick Penrose Rumford Stoke Climsland Valley Truckle
Connor Downs Frogpool Trethewey Perran Downs Sancreed Trebarvah

We plan to switch-off streetlighting (midnight to 5am) in the week beginning 15 January in these areas.

There has been a careful selection process, including liaison with local police, in choosing the most appropriate streetlights to switch off.

We are planning a follow-up press release when the next phase of switch off begins that will be shared on Cornwall Council’s social media channels.

We are sure that soon this will be seen as the norm, however we ask the local Parish Councils to be the conduit for either requests to switch back on (in exceptional circumstances and in liaison with the police) or for further lights to be turned off which we would be happy to consider.

There is an Interactive Mapping Page that will show the exact lights that will be switched-off. Please note the latest update will be over the coming weekend.

If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact streetlighting@cornwall.gov.uk.
